Our Kitchen Arrived

This post was imported from a blog called Contemporation where Amy and I wrote about the renovation of our 80’s contemporary home in Atlanta. That blog is no more but I wanted the content to live on.

I never intended for this to be a monthly blog but that seems to be the pace things are moving at around here. Since my last brief update, the structural engineer gave us a green light to use the existing footing and came up with the compromise of beefing up the existing wall to support the load of the addition rather than building the “double wall” that the architect had planned for. We sorted out the last remaining contract details with our general contractor, got final prints made for the permitting process and figured we’d be able to get started within a few days. Well, a few days would have been 2 weeks ago now. It turns out that we were within 200 ft of a “water of the state” and therefore needed a soil and erosion control plan in order to get a permit. After some research and a $350 bill from a survey company with the right credentials, we had a drawing showing where our (rather silly) silt fences need to go. We turned that in on Thursday and still haven’t heard anything from the city about the status of our permit. At this point, when people ask us how the addition is going, we just sigh.

On the bright side though, and as you probably guessed from the title, our kitchen got delivered last night. Yep, all 240 parcels of it. We’ve had a plan for our kitchen for a while, but we rushed to get our order in a couple weeks ago to catch the tail end of Ikea’s 20% off all kitchens sale. I would start unboxing and assembling all the cabinet bases but we still don’t have a kitchen to put them in yet. In the mean time, here’s a quick 3d preview of what our kitchen layout looks like.

There’s a lot going on in there so we’ll write a post sometimes soon with all the details, finish materials and sources of inspiration. Until then, I guess we’ll just twiddle our thumbs until the project actually gets under way. It might be this week, it might be next but for now we’ll just say sometime soonish.
